1987 300D Tensioner Assembly
 

I want to say that this board has been quite helpful to me and I now turn to you with my latest crisis.

I had an SUV back onto my hood at an angel such that the fan and radiator was damaged. Only much later did we learn that the tensioner assembly and pulley were also thrown askew.

My friend took things apart only to find that the assembly was in fine and working order. What had happened was that the mounting bolt for the assembly (onto the block) had been jarred and the threads eventually worked loose. He cleaned out the threads and reinstalled the assembly with lots of lock tite and it worked great for two months. Now the assembly has gotten loose again and the threads are no longer holding. He tightened it up and upon starting the engine the pulley became askew again. And within 5 miles I have the loud clatter of the pulley hitting the back side of the fan.

I am looking to find out the best method to permanently resolve this matter. Is that part of the block a covering plate for the timing chain that can be replaced? Should we chase the existing threads again? Should the existing threads be heli coiled and tapped? Or another procedure.

The timing chain cover can be replaced. Member GSXR had his timing cover break and replaced it. The problem with this repair is that the oil pan and head have to come off to replace it.
