Hello,

We have a pretty nice looking 1982 300CD with 167k sitting in the garage right now. The paint is nice, the interior is in great shape (seats all recovered/rebuilt several years ago), the tranny shifts ok, idles nicely and gets right up to 80mph cruise no problem?

Issues:
> brakes will need new rotors/pads soon all way around;
> all fluids/filters s/b changed;
> slop in steering wheel. Could be tie rod ends (drag links?) or the steering; have not diagnosed. I am assuming the front end requires bushings and tie rods due to its vintage and no evidence of this ever having been donr (we have a somewhat complete service history);
> A/C and blower is intermittent....probably a new push button device?

Anyway, before I start poking at the car I need a service manual, essential tools (hand and diagnostic), and perhaps a recommendation for a mechanic in the San Francisco east bay that is familiar with the w123 series.

I have a pretty good set of metric and US sockets, wrenches and such; that is not a concern. also have the requisite jacks, stands, et al. What I do not know about is what special automotive tools are required for the diesel?

Perhaps:
> gap measurement tool for valve adustments; will buy today;
> idle measurement meter? what other sort of measuring devices are required? recommendations?

Recommendation of best source for maintenance parts?

Is there a checklist anywhere for the w123 of things to go through and look at ?

Oh, the car is a silver (bluish tint) on dark blue tex; dash is perfect and will get a cover within a couple of weeks to keep it perfect. The stereo is upgraded to a blaupunkt CD receiver into stock speakers. Stock 14" alloys in decent shape; some scuffing but not obvious until up close.

Nice car for less than 5k. Now we want to cherry it out and drive it for another 150k.

Regards,

Carl

Pick up a Haynes Mercedes 123 Diesel manual. They're only 15 bucks or so, and most of the DIY processes are well illustrated.

As for mechanics in the SF Bay Area, I've heard of good experiences with "All Mercedes" in Oakland, and "Mercedes Select Service Center" in Milpitas.
