Let a guy put a transmission in for me, now he says it does not work

Hello everyone

I let a guy work off some of what he owed me by putting a transmission
into a 1982 300D for me.

The tranny was from a 1985, and was working when I gave it to him.

Now he says he has it installed and when he puts it in gear
nothing happens.

What do you think he screwed up ?

Not unlikely. I have witnessed the aftermath of just such an incident. Unfortunately it was on a manual transmission, which appeared to function normally for about 50 miles or so. By the time it started acting up, the Navy was out something like $15,000, not to mention the lost time of having to scrounge up another 8LL Roadranger in Iraq

The doofus that did that was as usual, too smart to follow instructions from his superiors. The superior in question being Jesse James, and the order being "Make sure you fill the torque converter before you install the transmission!".

Or at least not enough. Takes a lot of fluid to fill the converter and transmission.

Man, if he forgot to connect the driveshaft you might want to wait until he pays the rest rather than have him do any more work for you!!

Isn't an '85 transmission different from that on an '82? I think it's regulated differently too so maybe that's where the problem is.

Nope, it just has a tach pickup on the bell housing and a different stall speed torque converter.
Now, this was from a D and not an SD, right?

Or.... dude sold good transmission for a few hundred, and put a $50.00 pick-n-pull tranny in the car.

Don't laugh, I have heard of guys putting used clutches in cars ad returning the new parts for $$$ to the parts store.

Does the torque converter need to be filled before it is installed into the transmission, or will it fill when you fill the rest of the transmission with fluid ?

Dry fill is going to be 7.7 Qts (7.3L) on the 300SD 722.303 transmission.
