Tool for Ignition Tumbler Help
I need to remove the ignition tumbler in my 83 300SD.
I have read through all of the threads which tell how to do this. However, I can't seem to find a tool which will do the job. I have one of the 'single hole tumblers'. I have tried paperclips, but they don't fully work. In one of the threads, it talks about using a 1.25mm allen wrench. Does anyone have a picture of what the actual MB tool looks like? Does anyone know where to get a 1.25mm allen wrench or the actual MB tool? (I've looked and cant find anything) Please help! |

I just yanked mine out of the SDL. A thicker paperclip works fine.
Turn the key to the # 2 position, stick the papperclip in and it should push the catch up. Then you need to spin the coller, I used some pliars. You might have to play with it a bit, the tumbler on the SDL was worn so the #2 spot didn't line up. You really need the MB puller tool to not mess up the collar, I scratched the collar up pretty good and on the SDL that will piss me off. So $40 for a new one and now I have to figure out how to put it back together without messing up the new one!

Yes, I did check out the DIY section extensively. I understand the process to remove. Found the #2 spot. That isn't the issue.
I just cant get the catch to "unlock". The paperclip I used wasn't strong enough and the next size up was too big. Its a tool thing right now. There must be a MB tool part number(s) for this? |

I've done 124/201/126 ignitions, and have used the largest allen-wrenches that will fit in the holes.
The tool has a tapered end I believe, when using the allen wrenches you twist them back and forth as you are pushing in, eventually the pin will push aside. I have since made a couple of tapered-end pins for the job, looks like the end of a syringe needle, cut at an angle. I believe that a year or so ago someone made them and posted photos here, not sure what to search for though (or who), but it was on the diesel forum or linked from here.

I just replaced mine using a fairly large paper clip. The correct tool is just a straight wire with a little handle. I used my paper clip and turned the key back and forth slightly until it found the right spot.

I tried and couldn't get mine out with a wire that was about the same diameter as a paper clip. I switched to a large size paper clip and it came out just fine. I was able to spin the collar with must my fingers, but it was pretty hard to get it started.

Do you have any Allen wrenches? Try and find one close to the size of the paper clip or that fits in the hole without binding. I found it easier to use than a paper clip. Long end goes in the hole.

You could try a finish nail or something like that.
They are a bit of a PITA to line up, you have to play with it a bit.

Paper clip is good -- but patience.... that's the real tool. Took over an hour. The rest is easy

I tried one of those thing screwdrivers, but the handle got in my way. I prefer a heavy guage paper clip.
Does anyone have any idea how to put the collar back on without scratching it? I don't really feel like spending $30 or whatever MB wants for the official tool. I was thinking I could cut some clear hose, heat it up with a heat gun and push it over some needle nose pliers. Think that will work?
