Could it be the wheel bearing?

My '83 300td makes a loud noise coming from the drivers side front wheel. It gets louder when I turn to the right. Could it be the wheel bearing. If so is that a big project to fix?
Thanks
stephanie

Yes it could be a wheel bearing and no, the job is not overly complicated. It does take some tools, and on your car I believe once you get to the wheel bearings you might as well change the rotors as they are integral with the bearing outer housing. Not too costly, check the "buy parts" tab in the logo for this site above, and search for some more explicit instructions.

I would do both sides especially if you elect to change the rotors, and then I would also do the brake pads. Remember, the key to success with bearings is maintaining cleanliness. Dirt in the grease or any grit inside the housing is unhealthy for bearings.

Good luck, Jim

Also, make sure not to over tighten the wheel bearing retaining nuts... I won't go into details about how I know this but suffice it to say it involved smoke and a new steering knuckle!

Don't forget to check the rear bearings too!

I had a 240D that had a noise that I thought was coming from the front....turns out it was the right rear wheel bearing...

I paid to have a shop do the job because of my lack of experience and special tools....

LOL, mine was backwards.. I thought it was the rear, and it was the front. Kind of a howling noise, louder when turning to the right.
