Trans shifts too soon...

JimmyL just stopped by to pick up his GP reamer and we took a peak under my hood. I mentioned that my only driveability complaint is being in 4th gear by 30 mph under most throttle application, 45 mph if I'm pushing the carpet. It shifts out of first before 10 mph so any "need for speed" is met with my manually shifting. Jimmy looked at the vac line from the top of the IP and said it looked as if it were getting direct vacuum rather than restricted/modulated thru the green check valve(?) above the IP. Everything looks like OE set up.. Any suggestions ?

If memory serves me correct, there is some adjustment on the "Bowden" cable that partially controls this. Try searching the DIY section for that and maybe the diesel forum itself.

Whoops, yea I forgot about the Bowden cable, but was thrown off when I saw the vac line that goes from the VCV on the IP go into a splitter, then one side goes down to tranny. The other side is connected to full vacuum, which would negate the control of the VCV.
Right?

Found a link but it says the "White knob" is by the oli cooler on the left side of the engine.. Maybe that meant "oil filter housing" ?

That sounds like the primer pump to me!

Look at your linkage on top of the valve cover....there is a flat pivoting metal plate...right in there you should see a white plastic threaded screw adjustment...that is your Bowden cable. It will help you adjust your shift points.

I THINK...clockwise is later shifts and counter clockwise shifts sooner....or else it's the other way around! Either way, give it two full turns (count your turns) and see what happens. If you went the wrong way, turn back two turns + 2 turns more.

Once you get close to where you like it, even a 1/4 turn can be felt when driving the car. It is really pretty neat, you can actually "tune" your shifts to your style of driving....nice and easy old fart (me) or throtle wide open hammer head! Just play with and you'll see what I mean.

Vacuum deals with the hard/softness of shift and the bowden cable deals with when it shifts.

Yeah. I don't have issues with the harshness. Frankly, I like the firmness just the way it is. Firm shifts = Less Slippage. I'm just sick of having to play Paddle Shifter... lol.

Excellent!! Glad to hear it. You have a solid car there Ronny, and now it feels like a new car. Now if you can just find an affordable rear W126 windshield.
Get that oil cap gasket and put the dealership pressure washer to work. You can also better judge that oil cooler line ooze.
I can't believe I went brain dead today on the Bowden cable. I had my vacuum blinders on..... I fought that '80 tranny vacuum so much I just had tunnel vision.
Was it cw to delay the shifts?

CW ? It is the upper cooler hose but as far as the rest, I have a bottle of Simple Green and the pressure washer out back to wash the remaining PB Blaster off the engine. My parts guy got be both cooler lines for $120. They should be here today so I'll probably come down here early Saturday morning and change them, the oil and the filler cap then wash it down..

Ah.. Mine had sooo much slack that I'm amazed it shifted at all. The trans was replaced at 208K according to the previos owner. Probably been that way since. Turned it towards the passenger side first - no improvement so I turned it probably 7-8 turns to the drivers side - SUCCESS. I'll probably back it down a turn today tho... I started spraying the cooler lines last week along with the glow plugs. I already tried the upper hose at the cooler and it came off without too much force so I'm hoping the other connections do the same.. I'll stop at Wally-Mart tonight for my 5/40 Rotella...

CLOCKWISE?? OR COUNTER-CLOCKWISE?? As in the Bowden cable adjustment...which way did you turn the adjusting screw to make it do what??

Others may want to know before trying it. I never can remember! Although, it is about the easiest adjustment ever on a auto.

I'd assume it would be different from car to car depending on how far out yours is, but mine was towards the drivers side so, Clockwise when looking at it from the front.

To make it do what - As in my original post, under most conditions, I was in 4th gear by 30 mph. The 1-2 shift happened at about 5mph even when pressing carpet and flooring it at 40 mph would not produce a kickdown to 3rd gear. I'd have to manualy hold gears or downshift. Adjusting the cable got rid of that. Now half throttle takes 1st to about 25 mph, 2nd to 35, 3rd to 50. And if I slow to 40 mph and resume speed, it will kick down to 3rd.
