Exhaust system on 98 E300 turbo diesel?

A while back I had to have a repair done on the exhaust system of the 98 E300. A common stress point on this model's exhaust system is the inlet flange of the muffler......there are not enough hangers so the weight of the total system is hung by the aft hanger at the tail pipes and another forward by the engine. The weight of the system causes the inlet flange to fatigue and break off. The muffler shop repaired it by fabricating and rewelding a flange and reinforcing it with some metal bracing to help with the stress.
They said they have seen this problem a lot with W210 Diesels. ($200. repair).

Just yesterday the rear hanger hook welded to the rear/back end of the muffler broke loose.......had to do a quick repair on the road with a coat hanger to keep the muffler from banging around....so its probably another trip to my mufller guy after I attempt to spot weld it on myself.

Anyone else experiencing similar problems with the exhaust on their E300 TD??

The exhaust system is rock solid with the exception of the lack of hangers and the resulting fatigue of the inlet flange to the muffler.
Even the rear hanger hook that broke loose is in perfect shape.......it was the skimpy spot welds that held it to the muffler that rusted away and finally could not support all the weight. Kind of reminds me of the front spring perch issue!

Our '99 also had the rear most hanger weld break off, letting the muffler dangle. Some coat hangers for a quick fix until a replacement muffler was installed.

I've noticed that the NA OM606 210's have a different muffler. The entire exhaust on mine still looks great, except for the catalytic convertor which is rusting apart. I still haven't replaced it with a nice stainless steel resonator. I think a straight pipe would be too loud.

Wife found out one day that the rattling sound was the muffler that was dragging on the ground.

Seems more like a rust issue than defect.
