Converting 4spd -> 5spd? What gassers had 5 speeds (regardless of fit)

So I had a brilliant idea about converting a 4spd into a 5spd transmission. Finding a gasser 5spd that wouldn't work because of the bellhousing and tossing the internals into a 4spd.... Thoughts? Am I crazy or might it work? FI posted an ebay auction on a busted 4spd with a 5spd od on it. I was thinking about it and suddenly it seems like a much more viable option.

I thought that the five speeds had a different tail housing. Since I've never seen a 5er I have no Idea how the different gears are selected either.

Just looked at a 5er from a 190e on ebay. The case does look remarkably similar to the 4spd I've got in my garage. Maybe your onto something... I wish I had one to tear apart and have a look see.

This has been discussed similarly before. I several years ago, TomJ took both apart and determined that the tailhousing from the later model, 5-speed Getrag-equipped trannys will not swap over to the 4-speed Getrag used in the latrer 240Ds.

I can't find the thread but it's in here somewhere.

I must have missed that one.

So the "one piece" design in both 4 and 5 speeds of the later W123 were Getrag?

The broken 5 speed on ebay was a bolt on tail end to a early iron 4speed. Not all 5 speeds were Getrags...

This must account for the different shifters. I thought the difference was because it was a 5 speed, DOH
