Crazy Starter
My 84 300SD has a starter problem. Can you help? The last time it started, the starter motor continued to turn. It didn't remain engaged with the flywheel, but the only way I could make it stop was by diconnecting the baterry terminal. When I reconnect the battery, the starter motor starts spinning again, but not engaging the flywheel. Does this mean I need to install a new starter, or is there an easier, less expensive fix?

Less expensive maybe. Easier no. Just swap it out and be done with it.

that is the classic symptom of the solenoid fusing the main lugs together... replacement of the solenoid will fix it, but you practically have to pull the starter to change it, so the easiest thing to do is just that... change it.

Thanks for the tips. After reading all the starter removal horror stories, Guess I better find a shop to replace the starter, then on to my next project-repairing the odometer. It broke about 50K ago with 310,000 on the car, which runs quite well on used veggie oil or new veggie oil from COSTCO. I mix it about 60% used to 40% desiel.

My starter just did the same thing this morning. It started the car, but I kept hearing the starter spinning. I shut off the car, key off, and still spinning. I had to disconnect the battery, then bang on the starter. reconnected the battery and it stopped. looks like this will be the 3rd starter in about 6 years. I hate doing that job, but can do it in my sleep with all the experience.

Mine did this about eight months ago. Held a 2x4 against the starter and popped it with a hammer. It disengaged and hasn't failed to do so again since then. I keep the hammer where I can get at it pretty easy if it happens again, but so far it's gone back to working other than that one time.
