Stupid glowplug removal question OM603
I have been having rough starts lately and figured I had at least one bad glowplug. I just tested at the relay and 1 and 6 are both open. 2-5 all test .6.
So my question: does the nut holding the wire on the glow plug just pull off? When I turn it with the socket it just spins. I've searched and read the horror stories of breaking the glowplug off, but I can't find anything on removing the wire. Also I'm going to try and replace 1 and 6 without removing the intake. Any encouraging words will be appreciated. ![]()

The terminal lug has fingers that hold the nut. The nut can spin within the fingers.
If the nut spins without coming off the glow plug, use a flat screwdriver tip to pry the nut away from the glow plug as you turn the nut. Maybe you can use a spanner on the glow plug and deal with it with the glow plug off the head. Sixto 87 300D |

Remove the cruise actuator to have better access to the glow plugs. The windshield washer bottle might have to come off. Not sure what else the wagon has that might be in the way.

I can get to 1 through the fuel lines on top of the IP. Not sure about 6. I think the oil filter housing is in the way of 6.

Success
Just to close this out for future searchers. You can change the #1 and #6 glow plug on the OM603 with the intake still on, but it is not fun. I read on Diesel Giant’s site that he did all 6, so I thought I’d give it a try. I just had to press against the wire connector with a screw driver and the nut came right off. The glow plugs came out pretty easily too. Once I figured out how to get the socket on #6. I put 2 new Bosch plugs in and that were what came out as well. Any bets on when # 2-5 die?
The car starts so smoothly now, maybe we’ll keep it.
