What I did last night (warning..., dirty pics!)
No, I didn't surf internet porn..., much more graphic and sexy than that...,
I pulled the blown (run-away, happened while I was in garage) engine from a 300D Turbo and tore into it to see what happened. It would still run and drive around the yard, but a loud knock, running on three cyl's and fuel filling the oil pan. Here's engine sitting on cart after pull (another blown -oil starved- block, good crank and biodiesel shop heater in background) Top end looks dandy (only had 141K on it): Got to the 3rd pre-chamber and all went to hell: Took out the 4th and same thing: Here's all, good ones in front, not-so-good ones to rear: After pulling head, here's what I found: Piston #3 was beat to s**t (whoops..., can I say that on a family forum..??? ;-) But #4 was perfect? Whatever pieces came apart on that one must've come out at just the right time to be blown out the exhaust before it could bash about the chamber and wreak havoc on the piston. Will pull the block apart and see if/what damage is there. It is still hard to rotate crank, so I assume there's a bent rod or worse down there. BTW, this is a 617.950 engine. The cam does measure different than the two other .952's I have in pieces, but had the carbide tipped rockers? Lower oil pan has red gasket sealer, so it's been apart before. Not sure why on such a new motor, but I'll see pretty soon I'm sure..... OK, I promise no more filth for a while....

Yikes, what can cause that to happen to a pre-chamber?

It can't be a OM617. I've read on here thousands of times that they are bullet proof. Sure looks like a OM617 though.

I have an engine that had a very similar issue but I don't think it ran away. It also had a PC disintegrate and it dinged up the piston and cylinder wall near the top. I didn't get the damaged head in the deal but the seller did show me the damage it did to the head. It looked about as bad as your piston.
