'79 300sd heater

Hi,
this would be my first post on this forum. I just purchased a 1979 300SD mercedes. The heater doesn't seem to be working--blows cold air.

Can anyone out there tell me what some of the common reasons for not working and fixes are on these heaters?

Thanks

Does your climate control panel look like this? With the buttons going vertically and the large temperature knob? If so, you've got the ACCII system and you'll probably need to replace the servo and amplifier. Unfortunately that's pretty expensive.

Try hitting the defrost button and let it run for a few minutes. Does the air get hot? If not, it's the servo, and you usually have to also replace the amplifier at the same time. A servo will cost you anywhere from $500-$1400, depending on where you get it. The amplifier costs from $100-$225. There's also a digital upgrade kit that replaces both of these for $700. I've gotten my system working and I'm happy with it, but if it ever goes out again I'm doing the digital upgrade.

You've got the evil servo. However, before deciding to replace it, you need to make sure that your engine is actually reaching operating temperature and that the auxilliary water pump is working because lack of heat could be explained by problems in those areas as well as problems with the servo.
You can visually inspect the servo for cracks and leaks. It is in the back right corner of the engine compartment and the auxilliary pump is right next to it.

Thanks for those replies. I've been out of the loop. The P.O. suggested the servo could somehow be bypassed and the heater hooked up. Any thoughts on that?

Search on it. There are instructions on the forum as to how to do it. There is a kit available on Ebay if you don't want to buy the parts at HOme Depot.

I have an 80 sd which had the same problem. I chose to bypass the servo, I will take some pics of the bypass and put them on here for you.

I would also recommend checking the Aux water pump is coming on.

There's a used servo on Ebay at the moment for $85.
