Cluster from 300CD work in 300D?

I picked up a replacement cluster, and someone labeled "300CD" on the back. The seller said it was from an 82 300D, maybe he meant 300CD. Any difference? Seems to me that the electrical connector to the tach looks a little different than what I have.

Thanks,

Chuck

They should be the same, IMHO.

Jumpin on here,
I yanked a cluster out of a 77 300D. the gauges are the exact same as my busted cluster out of my 84300D. Will it work?

The 77 300D should have a 100mph speedometer while the 84 should have a 125mph speedometer, the 77's won't read correctly in the 84. The 77 also has a large clock while the 84 has a clock/tach combo. I think the old clock should work.

speedos match the ratio of the rear end gears.

Any cluster from any W123 will work the only differences are the speedo/odo rate, clock or clock/tach, and economy gauge on some gassers.

Depends on year. Some have a different style tach connector on the back. I tried to splice the connector onto the other one, and I think my tach went backwards. It was something weird like that. I can yank the clusters and show you pics of what I mean. My 85 and 82 are incompatible as far as that one connection.

Yeah, I definitely have the same "different connector" situation. Though I could transplant the tach from my current installed cluster to this replacement and I suppose that would address the problem.

Still a tach with a AT car is not that useful anyway, I might instead opt for "the big clock" at some point.

The gauges on the cluster off of the 77 match exactly my gauges on my 84. I think it was replaced at some point due to the fact that the mileage only reads 44,000.

So do ya'll think it will work then? Also, can I do this job w/out yanking out the entire dash??

Can't be the same

You are most probably correct to assume that it has been changed, because as noted there are quite a few changes between the 77 and the 84. Some of the functions would work OK, some will be off, like the speedometer, some won't work, like the tach, or it won't have a tach. But it will fill the space correctly and I think that most of the electrical wiring would be OK.
