Rear End Noise

I have an '81 240D manual that makes a "clunking" sound when I shift from 2nd to 3rd and then to 4th. Seems to come from the rear end. After shifting all is quiet and smooth. Anyone have any idea what this noise might be?

Thanks,

Jim

Our '83 300SD does that too. It is likely due to a worn differential or worn CV-axles (or both).....its been doing it for 40k+ on ours....so I'd say drive it till it gets worse or something bad happens. Its not like a 240 puts all that much strain on the drive components as it is.

I would think if the driveshaft u-joint were real loose that you'd get some pretty severe vibration wouldn't you?

dont forget the carrier bearing/ rubber mount.

diff will probably howl a bit if it is loose enough to clunk.

check flex discs.

a failure of any of these components at hiway speeds is dangerous. sure, there is a chance it could be something minor that you can run for many miles, but you should get under there and verify what is wrong....
