Auto Tranny swap question....

Hello all!

This question bridges the gas and oil burner forums, so forgive me if this is in the wrong spot. I have a 1994 C280 with a crap motor but a good 722.424 transmission. In the garage I've got a nice 1988 vintage 602 2.5 Diesel that would look mighty nice in the C class .

My first guess is that they will mate up but anyone have a definitive answer (forget the rest of the swap issues, I'll jump off that bridge when I get there)?

Thanks!

Klaus

You will need to see where the starter bump is on the block. Usually the starter is on the passenger side on a diesel and the driver side on the gasser.

Plus you need to be sure the drivetrain can handle the torque generated by the diesel engine.

Do not worry about fitment as anything can be modified. It just depends on how much time energy and $$$ you want to invest.

Thanks for the reply. The starter is on the same side on both engines, and the bellhousing looks to have the same bolt pattern (from what I can see above the car). Input shaft the same??

The torque is probably not much different at peak, but the torque range of the diesel may be an issue. Does anyone have the gear ratios for the 722.424? If it is too much of a bear, I'll just toss a 5-speed in it!

Getting more excited at the thought of my C250D .........
