pesky rack damper adjustment again
Greetings. I am trying to sort out a stalling issue that developed shortly after I started having a pulsating idle (plus or minus 100 rpm from 750). Previous threads have indicated that a tired rack damper might cause the pulsating idle, but mine also dies if I rev it a bit then release the throttle. Worse when cold, but also when hot, and this is actually a more serious concern, as it has started happening in traffic. Otherwise, car runs strong under load at sustained highway speeds. Valves were adj 4K miles ago. Filters all freshly replaced. Weather is warm down here, so cold temps not a mitigating factor.
I have a new rack damper on order, but today was playing around with the old one and screwed it to various positions, including all the way in, with no discernable effect on the idle or either of the maladies described. So, two questions. Isn't screwing around with the rack damper bolt supposed to do something, and if not, does this suggest that mine is just completely worn out? Is the stalling after letting up on the throttle likely to be caused by the suspect rack damper? Thanks.

It does seem your pin isn't doing anything, you should see a difference in the smoothness of your idle when adjusting the pin.

If it's completely worn out, you wont get any adjustment, I suggest replacing it.

Thanks, that confirms that my $59 is perhaps justified. After I posted this thread, I did some additional, more systematic trials by marking the bolt and backing out from its stop. At three full turns out I did notice a slight improvement that dissipated if was adjusted one way or the other, but this still did not completely eliminate the stalling problem, so I'm anxious to put in the new one. By the way, Phil at Fastlane is great, in case that hasn't been repeated enough.
