how do you get these tranny bushings in ?

I'm trying to replace the rubber bushings on my 240D manual transmission. i did a search and found a good link on making a press. I tried it and damaged the bushing. any other suggestions?

I have not had too replace one yet, but I always thought that I'd make a press out of a bolt and a couple big washers, lub up the bushings, and squeeze, ......is that what you tried?

I think I read somewhere that putting the bushings in very hot water will soften them enough to make the press fit easier.

The other trick is that bolt press. I haven't tried it yet, but someone posted that the spacer bolt was important to allow the bushing to come through the fitting. Search the threads for "replacing all shifter bushings on w126" by rurik.

The secret is to remove the bracket in which the bushing goes. This is not difficult. Once you have the bracket in a vice, you have both hands available and the bushing is quite easy to install.

Not sure, but they look very similar in shape.

The real secret is to use the proper tool:

Easy way is to grab a quarter ($.25) and a 19mm short socket. Hold the bushing in the hole, the socket on the other side of the bracket, and the quarter over the bushing. Take a pair of channel locks, and squeeze the quarter and the socket together. The bushing pops right in. No heating or cutting involved.
