Oil in the Turbo?

Can oil get into my turbo?
I think I read that here but cannot find in the search what I'm looking for.

I was driving the Greasecar last night and noticed that every time I mashed the turbo I sent a big cloud of black smoke out my back end. How embarrassing. So can oil get into my turbo and cause black smoke?

Can anyone give links to threads so I can read up?
Thanks!

Black smoke is an indication of unburned fuel, not completely burned, anyway. Oil smoke is a blue/gray/white color. Your ALDA may have been adjusted, or you may want to adjust it. Or, dirty injectors.

The ALDA is the bolt that came out of the other engine on the trip, right?
Goes from the back of the manifold with the banjo bolt. Should it be adjusted tighter or looser after cleaning?
Thanks!

Before you change anything, remember that at night in the glare of the headlights of the following car, these cars always look like they are putting out way more smoke than they do in daylight.

Yeah, but we've seen this in the daytime, too.
I was just trying to do funky things with the car; engaging turbo and trying to make the car smoke.
Tom said the following me home last night he could REALLY smell the exhaust, both diesel and veggie. He agrees that the car is probably over fueled.

My Powerstroke (64k miles) puts out a cloud of black smoke when the turbo engages at full throttle. Just unburned fuel.

I understand but why doesn't my W116 do this when I mash on the accelerator?
I mean I have NEVER been able to make that car smoke. None. So it can
be done, making a diesel not smoke.
Since the greasecar is our company car, I think if those not understanding how a
diesel works will think that our company is polluting the environment. And we're just outside of Boulder. This is the liberal haven of Colorado.
So I can't just let it smoke under load. I need to find out how to stop it.
Even if it makes the car less powerful. Pizza delivery doesn't need big power.
And it's not very hilly in our delivery area.

Oil in Turbocharger

'Only two ways I know of with 617.XXX series motors.
1.That damn PVC type hose from the top of the valve cover to the top of
the air cleaner/filter case. It'll always pump some oil mist into the intake.
2. Bad Turbocharger seals/bearings.This one is usually impossible to miss
'cause you leave a smoke cloud (in broad daylight) like a WWII Destroyer.

Is this the car you just drove back from Florida? If so, the alda could be adjusted to sea level. If so, readjust it to compensate for being a mile high.
Have you had it emission tested? The emissions report should give you a % of opacity which you could use to determine how smoky it is.

No, this is the Greasecar from here in Golden.
It smokes white at idle and when driving easy.
When the turbo has to kick in or I need to go up hwy 93, or pass someone on the road then I smoke black and copious amounts.

Smoke Cloud

My response was trying to say that "Bad Seals/Bearings" inside a Turbocharger
are usually quite evident to everyone, because the lube oil from the Turbo is
forced into the intake...resulting in a cloud of smoke just like a WWII
Destroyer "Laying a Smoke Curtain" as a protective device.
They (The Oilers in the Engine room) would use used lube oil injected into the
exhaust stream of the fires from the boilers.

If it is putting out white smoke (assuming it is at operating temp) when driving I would be thinking the IP timing needs to be tweaked a little.
I just though of this: To get the best us of alternate fuels dose the timing have to be changed?

Not sure, but sounds like. The pics show the two I have, the unmolested one has a black plastic cap, the other I removed to adjust, turn CCW, after loosening lock nut, to adjust.

Ginny,

I think the issue is your ALDA setting as others have mentioned. Before you do any adjusting make sure the car isnt consuming oil like crazy or idling really rough or something like that. From your description it sounds like the car is fine, just smoking too much.

Its easy to adjust, especially if you are adjusting it for less fueling like you will be doing.

On the back top of your IP there is a 2" by 2" square metal structure. Thats the ALDA. In the center of the ALDA there is a slotted adjustment screw. From the factory it comes with a black cap over it, but I suspect your black cap is gone and there is just the adjustment screw. Loosen the locknut. To adjust for LESS fueling you screw IN (CW) (the way you want to go). MORE fueling you go OUT (CCW). Try it in half turn increments. Keep track of here you began, you can always just go back to square one.

Good luck,
dd
