considering getting a 300d

this will be my first benz and i was wondering how much i should offer him.
1978 300D 138,xxx it is local but have yet to get a actuall look, planing on going Wed. based on pictures he sent.
-INTERIOR the interior and dash are in good condition (no noticable cracks). non origional radio.
-EXTERIOR two rust spots (bottom left front QP and bottom right rear QP)
cracked left lens cover. paint looks good.
-ENGINE looks clean, says he got a new water pump and installed a block heater.
-OTHER new brakes, tires and battery. automatic tranny.
might convert to wvo, maybe.
if you want more info just ask

Looks pretty nice. Definately get a PPI by a knowledgeable mechanic. You want full service records. They will help verify the mileage, which is awfully low for a '78. If service records aren't available, you may still want to buy, but purchase price should be much less.

Depending on records and results of PPI, you might be looking at $2000-5000, maybe a little more if everything checks out.

I generally advise against WVO conversion.

Plausible. I Carfaxed an old Lincoln Town Car that I used to own and it was first registered in West Palm Beach to someone who drove it about 2,000 miles a year for its first eight years. I'm guessing what followed was an estate sale.

Don't bother. The dash is blue, therefore it IS cracked. No question.....
With that big rust spot staring at you I certainly wouldn't pay more that a couple grand at most.
It does look like a worthy car to own though....

Roger that, The rust does bring the price down allot, a couple grand sounds about right too me.

The covers for the front kick panels by the door are missing, exposing some wires/vacuum lines. I wonder if there were any vacuum problems? Those aren't always missing unless somebody had to remove them for a reason, I would think.

If climate control and heater works make sure the AC servo is not cracked or leaking at the very least. Looks like owner is an MBCA member, see if the car is listed there for sale and you get more information too. Finally it looks like the glovebox has been replaced, it looks more pale than the dash - below the dash cap. See if key locks the glovebox.
