w123 manual sunroof problem
handle twists good to unlock/release/whatever it does, and it slides back and forth well. but when i shut it and go to lock/push it up/seal it i have to exert tremendous torque on the handle before it eventually pops loudly and turns a complete rotation. I have read somewhere here that you have to pull down on the handle to actuate the movement but mine doesnt seem to want to pull down ?? what needs lube, ive looked around up there but dont see clearly whats going on when i turn the handle. I need to have my sun-roof open and the problem is getting worse over time, its so bad now that i dont even want to open it.

It sounds like the closing arms need to be lubricated. They get dirty after a while and cause restriction between the arms and the spring clips. The best way is to remove the s/r, lay it flat w/actuators up and clean all the spring clips & sliding surfaces. Then lube w/a light oil such as 3in1. Graphite is much too messy for this and silicone is too thin. Remember, this stuff hangs upside down. As long as the s/r is out, clean & lube the entire actuator the same way. Then clean the feet and sliding rails, and lube the rails w/silicone spray. Once everythng is clean, you may have to readjust the closing arms if you are able to move the s/r from a locked open position, so check it at various positions.

Have someone actuate the handle while you watch from above. It sounds like the back of the SR is hanging up on the roof of the car (not sliding far enough forward). If this is the case, it may be maladjusted.

I have a similar problem. Mine will slide all the way forward, but when I twist the handle to lock it into place, it pulls the sunroof back about a quarter of an inch. I recently took it out to replace the seals and have had this problem since I put it back together.
I'm not sure how to adjust it. The service manual I have from MBUSA doesn't really indicate how this adjusting is to be done.

there is a hard rubber roller on each side that pushes against an triangular piece towards the outside of the track. The rollers push against that when you turn the handle forcing the SR forward and up. Check the rollers, they tend to crack, and wear flat spots. Otherwise, if you take the SR out you will find that there is an adjustment on the slides which move front to back. Also, I believe the length of each arm can be adjusted to make sure it is centered in the hole.

Thanks. I'll look for those this weekend when I take the roof out again for another stab at the problem on mine.
