No Gauges or brake lights
It's a 79 300SD and to the best of my knowledge it all happened at the same time, any ideas? Oh, the oil gauge still works! : ) Thanks.

Replace it anyway. They can look fine and still be bad.

Better fuses
I read on another thread about old ceramic/aluminum fuses becoming bad at the contact point over time with the guaged section still intact. They were suggesting some newer ones with copper instead of aluminum. I found those sets on ebay (bronze).
Is that the way to go? Charles |

How about the large plug on the back of the instrumrnt cluster?
And yes change the fuse first. I would twist the fuse to get a good conection, then the fuse would have a circle cut in it on both ends, not good. I am now using the copper fuse. 300SD 1980 |

The brake lights and instruments share a fuse. It happened to me recently. Just replace the fuse.

On the W126 its fuse 12 I think.....but it might be different on a W116....at a cost of about 6 cents apiece when bought online....you may as well replace all of them.

Ceramic or plastic
Now you tell me!
I didn't know they came in anything but ceramic. The listing doesn't say so I guess I'll find out when they arrive. What's the problem with the plastic body ones? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&sspagename=ADME%3AB%3AEOIBSAA%3AUS%3A31&viewitem=&item=290211630634 Charles |

Nothing, those in the link are the ones I have in both of my cars. Plastics today are a different animal from years ago.

We used a plastic 8A we found in the glove box of our 300D to replace a blown fuse and its been working just fine....its a little longer than the ceramic ones though. We'll throw in a ceramic one next time we're working on it just so it fits properly.... But its been fine so far...
