window problems....
I am a first time MB owner, I have a 83 300 sd and 3 of my windows will not work( FL, RL and FR). I tried replacing the switches on the center console and when I installed them the rear left began to move then stopped working again. Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I would start with the fuses. The fuses are set up to run FL & RR on one fuse and FR & RL on another fuse. If the fuses are OK then you can check if there is power going to the window motors by removing the door panel and then you will find a two wire terminal block that the wires go to so you can check for power. Before you remove door panels make sure you have the switches plugged all the way in.
Questions; Where are you located? Were the new switches you installed new or used? When I was dealing with window problems I jumped the wires at the switch with 12v to see if the windows would work and all but the drivers window worked. |
There is also a window relay located behind the instrument cluster; but check the other things first.

Also, unless the switches were new they probably need to be cleaned. Pretty easy job. Pop the switches out but watch out for the ball bearings. I just did this last weekend with perfect results. Otherwise they might have some new/used replacements at Fastlane.

I bought the switches from Fastlane and they look new. I will try checking power to the individual motors and go from there. How difficult is it to remove the instrument cluster to get to the relay? Do I need any special tools?
BTW I am in Maricopa, AZ. |
To get the cluster out remove the underdash panel in the foot well. Then reach up behind the cluster and push it out. Sometimes they are a tight fit so you might have ot push kind of hard.
Can you hear the motors working when you push the buttons. There is a chance that the teeth on the window regulators are broken off, so that the motor has no teeth to grab. I would check to make sure you are getting voltage to the window motors. If you are then the motors are and the windows aren't working then you have a bad motor. If not they you have a problem upstream somewhere. Probably not the switches since they are new. I'm guessing the motors are bad. |
