Nice SDL on ebay...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-Benz-S-Class-SDL-1986-Mercedes-Benz-300SDL-magnificent-example-like-new_W0QQitemZ270216663478QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item270216663478

If someone is looking for one, this one is pretty damn nice.

Its optioned out like a 560, which is pretty rare, the diesels were usualy the lightly optioned "cheap" models. But it looks like whoever ordered this car checked all the boxes.

Wow....they sure did check all the check boxes!

That is one nice SDL. Wshew. I don't think I could bring myself to drive it if I had a car like that. I'd be too afraid of someone rear ending it or something.

nice....

Anyone that has a reclining BACK seat has to take a picture of that for me. I cannot visualize how that would work. Does the seat slide forward bringing the back down and forward?

Okay, my 86 300SDL for sale doesn't have the same options, but I do have it listed for half of the current bid (reserve not met):

Bottom cushion moves fore/aft, and the back cushion is tied to the bottom, so a forward motion reclines the back, and a rearward motion returns it to an upright position.

The top of the backrest cushion has a filler piece that ties it to the hatrack. When the seat is in the rearmost position, the top of the backrest stands a bit "proud" of the hatrack, when reclined fully, the top of the backrest is more or less level with the hatrack.

That IS nice, except for those chrome fender trim pieces. Why do people put those on their cars? Are they after market items or does Mercedes actually put them on some cars?

Very nice car. I have a 1986 300sdl with 106,000 miles on it. I have the reclining rear seats but no heated seats nor the power lumbar seats. I have a question. Where are the switches for the power lumbar seats located? Are these considered the orthopedic seats?
My car is light blue with the dark blue leather interior. My interior is in excellent condition except for 2 dash cracks, my exterior is another story. Unfortunately the Physician I purchased this from parked by feel at times, and parking lots have taken its toll on the doors.
I have had it 3 years, purchased it with 79,000 miles on it, and other than routine maintenance, this has been a very reliable car.
I also have a 2007 BMW 530i which is a great driving car, but I prefer driving the Benz on 100 mile or longer Interstate trips.

Would look much better with a set of those nifty "spinner wheels" on it, eh?

Beside the seat belt buckle. I've seen two cars with them out of the hundreds of W126s I've seen... both were Euro. I can only assume this was a high dollar option. Like four place seating (think E23 745i BMW or E32 750iL), I have only seen on the Euro W126.

The goodies sound cool, but are hard pressed to work over the years. I would venture from abuse or nonuse.

The switches for the orthopedic seats are near the seat belt buckle (between the base of the seat and the center console.

I've wondered the same thing - I think it makes the car look cheaper. I'm pretty sure they're aftermarket, because they look too tacky for MB original equip.

They may have been dealer add-ons. "Americans gotta have lottsa chrome, ya know." Aside from the questionable looks, I bet they are rust-attractors.
