Exclamation shift knob question

so when i got my ever so lovely '79 240D 4 spd the knob was sorta glued on (top portion) well. that has fallen off, and i don't want to glue it back.
and now every day I drive it... more and more falls off...
I don't really want to spend the mucho $$$ to get a replacement and I cant locate a junk'd 4spd anywhere.
is there some way I can just put on one of the run of the mill knobs from say like autozone?

Yes, you can. The stock knob is rubber cast over a rod with threads on the inside. I used a razor knife to cut the rubber off all but the bottom inch or so, which exposed the top part of the rod. Cut a neat ring in the rubber, then slit the part that you want to remove and peel it off. Once the rod is exposed you can use any universal knob with a set screw.

The stock shifter knob is like $20 bucks! I just bought one for China a while back. How broke are you?????????
It's $25 bucks at ******** AZ., $21 bucks at Performance Prod. and $34 bucks at Fastlane. That shouldn't break the bank......

haha. im. well. i have a full tank, but my car is at the shop
and i have a 20 in my wallet
and .20 in my checking account.

i put all of my money in CD's for 12+ months...
so yea.
i wasn't anticipating a blow out, bent rim, bad clutch/no breakfluid, tow bill , gas spike, school fee thingy to happen. and i have multiple aftermarket knobs in my garage... so i just want to use one of them...
