BArter system again.. Anyone local have valve adjustment tools ?

It's been almost 15,000 miles since it's been done and with my fill up costing $3.89 gal last night, I want to squeeze every mile out of the Old Girl. I've never done it before on the 617 and would rather have someone experienced do it with me, and I don't have the tools.. D/FW area. In exchange, I have use of 18 lifts any time you need. Evenings or weekends of course. Any bids ?

Just got some Hazet valve adjustment wrenches a few weeks ago. If you're gonna do it in your service area, I know where that is.
Heck, you're turning into my new tool tester.
Count me in.

I always copy out a page from the manual. I mark the specs on the sheet, hang it up near the car and mark off the valves one by one. I also like to write down the starting gap just for the OCD benefits......
I'll copy one for your engine. OM617.952

Lift and tools

I actually have a lift and the tool, but Jimmy beats me to the punch again!

I could use some help chasing down a pull to the right on my 84 300sd and a weird shimmy on my W140 (had the lower control arm bushings done & alignment at the dealer - next up is rebalance the tires and retorque the lugs)....

did you cross-rotate the front tires ?

What tires are you running on the 140 ? They're notoriously heavy and tend to flat spot tires with soft compounds, particularly with the weather we've been having. Take it for a long ride and see if the shimmy deminishes..

His W-140 is also supporting the big V12, so that makes sense.

**edit**
BTW, have you gotten your new valve cover gasket already?

Flat Spots

That is believable - that car doesn't leave the garage often. They are michelins, though I'm not sure what flavor at the moment (I'm at work right now). I need to cross rotate and have them checked for balance. The previous owner chromed the oem alloy rims (ick). I'm sure thats not helping.

Jimmy, you're more than welcome to come check out the garage - you have my cell

4700lb V12's are prime offenders with flat spotting. They were originally coming thru with V,Z-rated Michelins & Pirellis. They were replacing them with H-rated tires and affixing a 130mph speed limit sticker on the cluster for the early ones. I've seen the same problem as recent as 2004 SL 55 while I was still there with P-Zero's.

I like you Texans. I'm always picturing wide open spaces, ranches, big garages, rust-free benzes and good music. I think I need to relocate.

Mostly, I'm just chiming in to share in my OCD habits too - I write down my gaps too. We have serious issues.

Texas is where I imagine my 5+ acres and independence. Knowledgeable MB owners with good work ethics nearby would be a cool bonus.
