possibly fixed my intermittent glow plug relay

I have an 80 MB that started fine one day as I moved it from behind the garage to the driveway and then the next day it would not start. It has 5 good glow plugs and about 135,000 miles. Non synthetic oil is used.

I tried smacking the side of the relay with a heavy scewdriver...nothing. Retested gp resistance...all within range. Good battery voltage at relay points, good battery voltage. Still would not fire over.
I took the gp relay out of its box and lightly filed down the contact points inside. The points closest to the outside of the box had the most carbon or burn on them. There are 2 sets attached to a copper plate. You can choose to release the spring retaining the plate or maybe use an emory nail file to get in between the points. I chose to remove the spring and move the plate out of the way so I coould use a jewelers file. Actually one of the files I have from my dad... he's a retired tool and die maker. Be careful not to lose the spring..it will fly away

I then proceeded to reassemble the plate and test the unit out of the box. It was kind of cool to see how the relay works. Be careful not to touch the copper plate for too long as it gets quite warm It fired right over with one gp cycle.

I tested the car this morning before work and it fired right over with one gp cycle.

Moral of the story...try fixing the relay before spending cash on a new one. I'll have to see if it holds up or if I just got lucky with the last 2 start ups.

Has anyone else had success with this method?

sounds like good advice, burned contacts or broken solder joints have been cause of many failed relays, i am sure it will be fine for a while.
