Removing 240D crank pulley
 

I'll make it short and sweet. When removing the crank pulley, do I remove the 3 hex bolts first then large bolt or vice-versa? Also, what about the install??

The three (or six)bolts hold the pulley to the balancer, and prevent it from rotating on the crank. If you're pulling the whole thing off, you still need to separate the pulley from the balancer to access the threaded holes for the balancer puller tool.

I've always found it easier to remove the pulley and then the balancer. You get more room to fit your pulling rig in there.

Here's the deal.

My pulley sheard in half. The good half is still connected to the balancer and has to be removed to install my new pulley. I have the 3 hex bolts out and the large bolt is left.

I had the crank pulley come adrift on my 79 240D. Sheered the three allen bolts but since there were six bolt holes in the balancer, I simply rotated the pulley and put in three new allens (in three fresh holes). I didn't need to remove the old sheered off bolts that way. I did remove the radiator to make the job easer. In later years they went too six bolts for the pulley, seems like a 'no brainer" :rolleyes:

As I remember i didn't need to remove the large center bolt that holds the balancer on.

So I have the 3 allen bolts off now. Should the pulley come off with only them removed?? It doesn't seem right, but I haven't put much effort into trying to remove it yet. How can 3 small bolts drive all those accessories?

Yes, I think thats it, three allens. Like I said, the later 240D have six. I sure dont remember having too take off the big balancer nut, someone else my chime in and let us know for sure.

I do remember putting a balancer back on and trying to get those dowels too go in, wouldn't want too have to do that again for practice ;)

Yah, give her a couple wacks, see what happens, shouldn't take too much.

Yeah, the rolled center on them tends to stick a little in the center of the balancer, if you can get at both sides of it knock it alternatively on each side to rock it off. I looked at my 82's old engine (sitting on a roller cart), & the center bolt & washer looks to be clear of the pulley.

It came off then? Be sure too use thread lock when you put them back.

Just an FYI after removing the three bolts mine popped off 1970 220D. And I'm pretty sure the engines of 220D but not a hundred percent sure
