I bought the aero shell 4 at my local airport.

^^ THAT is a great thread!^^^
thanks

it doesn't mention SLS or self leveling, easy to miss. I will definitely be flushing in this manner if bleed screws have decent integrity

Plastic cannister in back of wagon

I have been working on my 1984 wagon and have replaced one of the actuators (struts) that was leaking. I filled up the reservoir with fluid but now I notice that there is a black plastic flattish cannister in the left rear well where the spare tire goes that seems to be hooked into the system with three lines at the bottom. This cannister is cracked (probably got bumped by the spare) and fluid is leaking out. What does this cannister do? How does it affect the system?

It's the fuel expansion tank and they are commonly found with cracks. A new one from the dealer is about $120. Early w123 wagons had a metal one that you could try to find used. If the nipples are OK, you can use fiberglass and resin to repair it.

Flushing SLS system

I want to flush out the SLS system for the rear hydraulics. Does anyone know which is the return line on the fluid reservoir at the front of the engine compartment? I had assumed it is the line coming out the top that has the filter attached to it. (Filter on return line odd though)

The line going to the filter is the return line. You can disconnect it and let it pump into a container while you fill the reservoir with fresh fluid. Then shutoff, reattach the line, and top off fluid.

Does it help to drop the rear end with some weight to empty out the struts while this is happening.. or will be thoroughly flushed as is?

Cycling the rear suspension and by extension the hyd valve (ie. jumping up and down on it) will help push old fluid out of the accumulators and struts.

Well sort of.....I've been walking right past one of the wagons each of my past 6 visits to the junkyard; just never looked under it --- I grabbed the control valve, "cannonballs", and metal expansion tank out of the OTHER wagon since it had the Palamino interior and JT wanted a Palamino hatch speaker cover....but the cover is not great --- who ever jerked it out did not remove the screws on the "back" side. The rest of the interior is in great shape except the dash and driver's seat --- and the 60% rear seat is missing. Even has the 3rd row seat.

Then I came back to the one I've walked past 6 times with the blue interior.......but only had time to grab the expansion tank. It has a pristine blue interior except for the dash and driver seat. GREAT looking intact hatch speaker cover in the blue one as well as ALL trim pieces.

The hatch rubber seals on both have tears and holes in them, so no use there. Transmissions are missing and I think the axles are missing on both of the wagons. Both have manual sunroofs. Both have luggage racks --- but NO crossbars; JimmyL already asked.

So? Does anyone need any 300TD parts?

If I were you, I'd at least remove the SLS pump but probably also the head. Heads with SLS pumps are not easy to find.

I will be replacing the resevoir soon. Can I let the fluid pump into a container from the return line, until the resevoir is empty, then remove & replace resevoir, fill with new fluid. Done?

Is this the best procedure for emptying the resevoir/draining the system? Will any harm be done by running the pump for a brief moment or two without fluid?

If I understand correctly, there's about 3.5 liters in the system?
