Now, now, that was a fun movie and you would all be singing high praise if there had been a MB Diesel in the convoy...

guys,

my other passion is off roading, expedition-ing, camping, etc. one of the more popular cb units is the Cobra 75WX which is a self contained, handheld cb unit. the speaker is in the handheld itsefl: it's great b/c you dont have to find a place to mount it on your dash. it can unplug and stash it in your glovebox or some other place while not in use.

the only disadvantage is that it does not have an external speaker option. a smaller cobra unit, the model 19, can be installed in place of your ashtray. many of my 4runner/tacoma driving friends have cut out the back of the ashtray part of their dash to allow it to fit rearwards into it.

but you guys need to keep in mind that a cb is only as good as your antenna and where that antenna is located. the best spot is smack dab in the middle of your roof. whip antennas on a magnetic mount are probably your best bet. wilson makes good ones.

as we go on trips across the desert, the guys who have the whip antenna combination can be heard best and can transmit/recieve farther than guys like myself who have mounted antennas in other locations.

i have a writeup on my 4runner-related website: www.4runners.org/writeups/cobra

I ought to go look to see if my wife every threw out my last leisure suit...... JOKING!!!! No, I don't still have one. But in the best CB voice I can muster up:

Breaker, BREAKER 8!!! *Channel 8 was our local channel*

other voice: Go ahead Breaker.

How about it Big Foot, you on here?

*silence*

Thanks for the Break.....Alligator with a BIG MOUTH and little ears is over and out.

This is a great idea! I've seen these at truck stops while on the road and the larger base unit will fit under the seat. There is even a remote speaker option you can velcro to your headrest for better listening!

I'm partial to the ham 2-meter band. I've got a 2-meter rig mounted under the passenger side dash. Ran the coax under the carpet in one of the wire channels, under the rear seat, and through to the trunk for a trunk lip mount 5/8 wave antenna. Works great...my radio is a 45-watt ex-police Motorola Spectra. Motorola commercial radios can't be beat for their receiver quality. Loads less garbage on the ham bands since bad behavior and language is not tolerated by other hams or the FCC. And you can get a whole lot farther than a few miles on any power needed up to 1500 watts.

Here's a shot of mine. Used to use it a lot when the 240D was my main means of transportation. Now I'm lucky if I put 1,000 miles on it a year.

Yep, thats exactly where I've permanently mounted my galaxy 66.... And spaekin of CB Radios - I've got an extra one for sale. How does $37.50 that includes postage sound???

It looks like this, except has push button digital tuning instaed of dial. Y'all can read about it here: http://support.radioshack.com/support_electronics/60345.htm

What I'd call a decent beginner's radio with tight features. Has original box with mounting hardware, bought 6 months ago in Nevada for driving newly purchased 300SD back cross country after leavin my souped-up galaxy at home in the 240D - so hardly been used.

(edit: And Hell Yeah these things are better than radar detectors on the road because ye hear about ALL police cars on the road, not just isolated radar traps. This radio saved my ass in Denver.
