According to the EPA website www.fueleconomy.gov the fuel mileage was 28 MPG for the 1982 240D with the manual transmission. I'm not sure if that is city or freeway. It may be combined.

Not quite what you're looking for but according to the english language owners manual I got with my 84 euro 300TD (not sure what year the owners manual was actually printed) an automatic 240TD (wagon) was rated by MB at:

9.5 L per 100 km in Urban Driving

and

7.7 L per 100 km at 90 km/hr (continuous speed)

10.6 L per 100 km at 120 km/hr (continuous speed)

For those of you who are metric impaired thats:

24.76 mpg city
30.55 mpg at 56 mph
22.19 mpg at 75 mph

Figure that your car should be better than those numbers due to its lighter body.

EDIT: I quoted the wrong metric numbers, they have been corrected.

I have never been near 25 in city driving.

anything over 20 is gravy but 20 is normal with a stick. I imagine you will get 3 mpg less with the automatic or 17 city and 24ish highway.

That last one sounds about right for my highway trips, and that's about how fast I drive, hills permiting. I imagine it would be possible to get the city mileage listed, but you'd have to drive like you have an egg on the accelerator. This would result in extreme dissatisfaction (possibly to the point of gunfire) on the part of anyone stuck behind me. The way I drive 20 city sounds more likely, though I did get 17 on one tank of all city, all short trips, and seriously cold weather.

Thanks, this also tells me that the 1980 300D's NA were rated at 23 mpg!!! So, that is still on target with my 1980 TD. The turbos were rated at 22 mpg. Also on target!!!

The first one is right 24.76.

But I calculate:
The second figure @ 56 mph: 37.34 mpg.
The third figure at 75 mph: 27 mpg.

On the third figure, how can you have less consumption in liters per 100 km/h and achieve less MPG?

You are correct.

I was looking at a table for several cars when I did this and I mistakenly quoted two different sets of numbers. The metric numbers I listed previously are for a 240TD with a 5-speed manual transmission.
The mpg figures I listed are the correct ones for a 240TD automatic.

So here are the correct numbers:

240 5-speed manual:
9.5 L per 100 km in Urban Driving
6.3 L per 100 km at 90 km/hr (continuous speed)
8.7 L per 100 km at 120 km/hr (continuous speed)
24.76 mpg city
37.34 mpg at 56 mph
27.04 mpg at 75 mph

240TD automatic
9.5 L per 100 km in Urban Driving
7.7 L per 100 km at 90 km/hr (continuous speed)
10.6 L per 100 km at 120 km/hr (continuous speed)
24.76 mpg city
30.55 mpg at 56 mph
22.19 mpg at 75 mph

I will edit the original post to avoid confusion in the future.
