-I'll bet many of the parts would be the same, some shafts/bearings/bushings may be the same size etc.. And the parts that wear the most 1st & 2nd syncro rings (I suppose) wouldn't be a problem, and hopefully the 5th gears wouldn't be as worn. Most of my (limited) experiance with manual tranys is on old Harleys-top gears hardly worn at all.
I don't think they are getrags, but I don't know who builds them. I remember looking for who built them at some point and I think I decided that benz must have built them themselves.

The iron models are Mercedes built but the all aluminum models are built by Getrag.

Thumbs down

You need to find a 280SE, which is a euro model. They are pretty rare in this country but the ones I have seen are usualy 4spd manuals. Since its the exact same car as your SD you would have all the little parts needed to make it work

I saw one a little while back at Helping Hands of America in Wrentham MA for sale. Price was $600. I don't remeber if it was a 4spd or 5spd.Strange euro cloth interior and was pretty beat up. But the mechanical stuff was all there. It was supposed to run.

that smaller aluminum 5speed that you have pictured there, it looks just like the 4 speed I have to put in my SD... how hard would it be to get the 5th gear in there?

The smaller five speed with the integral bell housing is not compatable with the typical 123 engine. The starter is on the wrong side. Now if your sd is a newer one with the 603 motor it probably bolts up.

I don't think it is feasible to convert a four speed to a five speed unless you had a five speed with the parts unique to the five speed to contribute. That would be the 123 five speed, the later one with the integral bell housing I would think would be out, period.

Look at the picture again, the starter is on the right side. It is used with the M110 and OM61x euro engines.

I see you are correct. I didn't know such an animal existed. It makes sense now that i think about it though, the integral bell four speeds were used on the later 240ds.
