Electrical woes in 1972 220d
Re: my 1972 220d/automatic
My generator idiot light refuses to shut off despite my having done the following things: (a professional) installed new (rebuilt bosch) alternator, I installed a new solid state voltage regulator and new grounding cable from engine to body frame. Can somebody give me detailed troubleshooting guidelines so that I can track down the electrical problem I am having? And yes, the batteries are great. They need constant recharging, as the electrical system is not recharging them effectively. I thank you in advace for any help you send my way. Alan H. |

First culprit I'd investigate is roasted *wiring harness* that leads from alt to starter motor - toasted and cracked insulation cooked from proximity to exhaust at engine hotside. This happened with one of my w123 240D's that started eating alternators.
