91 300D 2.5L Turbo like new found on a farm!!!

I took the back roads home today from the big city and run across a 91 300D 2.5 Turbo sitting in a farmers yard with a 4 Sale sign on the window. Car looks to be a garage queen, not dents, rust, inside was the same way, just minor wear showing and wood was like new, dash was in excellent shape.

The owner wasn't home and no price was on the car. What I would like to know is these a reliable model and what they are worth. Any help here? I would love to have another MB diesel.

BUY IT, you will not regret it.

As long as the interior is not torn up you can bring everything back to like new if you take your time. I used to think the 123 diesel was the best until I had an opportunity to work on one and then I ended up purchasing a '92 model. In my opinion they are easier to work on than the w123 turbo diesel.

I have found it to be a really good car, comfortable, gets 31+ mpg and it does not feel stretched out on the interstate quite like the 617 engine.

This looks like a car the wife would tell me is hers not mine. My luck is the guy will want $8k to $10 for the car or someone will beat me to a it and get it for just couple grand.

Don't do it, they're terrible.

Oh, by the way, what was the number on the For Sale sign?

I got the one I purchased for $4k with 202k miles on it. So far I have only had to change out the front main seal and install a new OVP relay. It needs balljoints and shocks all the way around. A/C blows cold now but it will need to be converted back to r12.

I love my 92 2.5

If you can wrap your head around the primitive EDS computer and it's habit of cutting boost when it sees anything wrong, they're fantastic cars. A 12 second 0-60 and 32mpg in the fantastic 124 chassis. Can't get much better than that in a late 80's/early 90's diesel MB, IMO...maybe a W140 with a turbo 606, but we didn't get those here

My 300CD is not only black on black, it's been converted to R134.

Any ball-park guesses as to the cost of converting back to R12? I sure would like that nice COLD A/C in Atlanta traffic...

Well I took the wife to look at the car and took 3 doz $100 bills with me and the old man took everyone. I had the wife drive it first to see what she had to say about it, she came back saying she really liked it and thought we should buy the car. When we got home with it she said it was the most comfortable and pleasant car to drive that she has ever driven so it now sits beside the Magnum in the garage and the Jeep is outside in the rain.

The car, so the owner said, will get 35 mpg and that they usually went about 650 miles on a tank before filling up when driving down to TX to visit family. I looked in the OM and the thing has a 21 gal fuel tank, so I guess the old man was telling the truth about going over 650 miles before they would even refuel. Everything on the car is original and works, from the fuel door lock to the old analog clock and even the cassette player. The car has never been somked in, wrecked, has original paint, and was garaged kept. When she was driving it home I followed in the Magnum and her two heavy throttle take off's and one pass only showed just a small puff of grayish(?) soot.

The only thing not working seems to be the a/c and I asked him and he said that they had it converted to R134 last summer and it has leaked down twice and figured it was the condensor leaking. My hope is they pinched the O'rings and like the guy that I bought my 240D from did and it only cost $3 for O rings and $69 for the a/c service at the Dodge dealer. I will have too buy a new set of tires for the car before winter gets here again, but for the price I paid for the car those 14" Michelin will be a cheap buy.

Pictures to follow tomorrow if the rain clears out.
