now my '85 300TD wagon is on the fritz

first my 300D was acting up and now my '85 300TDT is leaking radiator fluid. At first I thought, no big deal, I probably just need to replace a hose. Well, I cannot seem to find a hose that is leaking. When looking under the car, the fluid is literally dripping off of the engine itself. It is possible a gasket went bad and I'm leaking coolant from the engine?

The car runs fine and has not overheated.

Any advice is appreciated....it's raining car problems at my house. -Harv

Did you check the hoses at the rear of the engine for the climate system?

Also check the small hose by the thermostat, its like 4-5" long.

Leaking from the front of the oil pan is usually a bad water pump.

That usually makes a pretty distinctive noise in my experience, like metal pieces clattering and rubbing inside the pump.

The water pump on my car was not noisey when it began to leak coolant. Bearings were still good, seals were not.

Hmmm, water pump. If the water pump goes bad, doesn't the car overheat due to no water circulation?

I'm thinking it might be the water pump tho since I added some coolant....it is distinctively orange, but the only thing leaking out is still very green coolant. I'm thinking it is stil green because it is not circulating and mixing.

How hard is it to replace the water pump and what is the the defining way to diagnose this. -Harv

Water pump is usually the culprit if the leak is up front. No, it won't overheat. The seals in the pump are going bad.

The pump is not difficult. The fan comes off, the pulley comes off and the pump is right behind it.

To diagnose, just put your hand directly underneath the pump. If it comes up wet, you've found the culprit.
