Guide rod repair problems....

I have done my homework and read the manual and the DIY link. However, I can't seem to unscrew the guide rod mount from the guide rod. I tried using some heat with no success. My next thought was to remove the entire assembly including the guide rod. Will the guide rod slide easily out of the other end? Can I just remove the single bolt near the bottom of the spring? I tried but it seems to be stuck also. Will the guide rod slide out from the other end easily?

There isn't enough clearance to remove the guide rod bearing without lowering the mount assembly. To remove the guide rod bearing mount, you need to drop the bearing mount assembly. First, you need to ensure there is weight on the wheel (I used ramps) and it is stationary front-to-rear (I used a come-along). Also, measurements or thread count before removal help to return it to near alignment.

Are you able to turn the front portion of the bearing mount, where it threads into the guide rod, after loosening the clamp?

A MB spring compressor is needed to remove the bolt from the other end of the guide rod, i.e.... the front end.

I used jack stands, and had a helper use a 2x4 to pull the wheel forward enough to get clearance on the pas. side. the drive side has room in the engine area. Make sure you loosened the collar.

I have lowered the entire mount assembly. I cannot turn the front portion of the bearing mount to remove it from the guide rod. It is stuck. It is not rusted and I have applied heat with no success.

I was going to try to remove the bolt from the other end to remove the entire assembly. If it needs a spring compressor, forget about it. A friend of mine has a shop with a lift. It is going off to him after I put it all back together.

Did you loosen the bolt in the locking collar on the rod? When I did mine I had to spread the collar a little on one side to get it to unscrew easier, also try spraying some PB Blaster on the threads and in the split on the rod.

Hmmm, from your description it sounds as if the entire bearing assembly has rusted inside. That is hard for me to fathom unless the car has been sitting for a long time. The other alternative is to remove the hex-drive screws on the back side of the bearing and try to drive the whole carrier assembly forward resulting in the bearing mount sticking out from the rear. But if it is rusted that severely, even that may be a real bear to deal with.

I'll be honest with you, I can't imagine a vehicle that has been mobile with entire mount rusted into the assembly. This is a point that flexes constantly when in motion.

I guess I should take some pics as some of the posts don't seem to understand where it is stuck. I removed the entire bearing bracket and the backing plate but cannot unscrew the end from the guide rod as circled in the pic. I have since put the car all back together. It is very difficult to work with laying on your back. I am going to bring it to a friend of mine who has a lift and the proper tools to deal with it.

When I did mine, I hooked a come-along to the front of the car an pulled the strut forward to give the needed room. But it should turn after loosening the collar on it. Also you could remove the part that mounts to the car, and see if it will turn that way. I can not inagine it being that rusted up inside the mount. I would bet on the threads, and when you get it to move you will be set.
