E300D Timing Chain Life Span
I have a '97 E300D with 135,000 miles on it. I purchased the car with 110,000 miles but I don't know if/when the timing chain was changed.
What is the general life span of a timing chain? Thanks, Andy |

The chain has a service limit that is based upon it's elongation. IIRC, it's limited to 4 degrees. If it's beyond 4 degrees, the recommendation is to replace it.
The chain does not fail of it's own accord. The load on the double row chain is minimal as compared to it's capabilities. The chain fails when one of the guides fail and jams the the chain at high speed. If the engine was maintained properly and oil changes are performed regularly, the chain can last the life of the engine. |

I have 365K miles on my 96 E300 I have no idea how much stretch the chain has but the car runs fine and it gets 35 MPG highway fuel milage. Like the previous post stated maintenance is what gives these engines their longevity.

Hi
276000 Miles on original chain on a 1998 E300 Td and 205000 miles on a 1993 E300D so i reckon you have nothing to worry about. McCool300TD
