Help in identifying strange part

First, I want to say "Thanks" to the people who contribute to this forum. You have helped me learn so much about my new-to-me 300SDL, and I look forward to continuing the learning process.

Today, I was changing the oil for the first time since I purchased the car. When I removed the plastic cover from the bottom of the car, I found a curious part just hanging loose near the transmission cooler.

Not sure what it is, but it the end is broken off. In it's current form, it's about 6" in length, with a hook at the end, the remainder being some sort of spring. I have attached a photo for you to look at.

So, the questions are: 1. What is it? 2. Do I need it? 3. If I need it, where did it go and how do I get another?

that is the spring tensioner for the engine serpentine belt, it may be an old part from one that broke in the past, check and make sure yours is still there, will be in the front of the engine area attached to the belt tensioner, the spring will have a rubber sheath around it

mb part number:
603-993-27-10

Nope, I don't have one, so this must have been the one being used. It did have some destroyed rubber surrounding it, but it was difficult to tell if it was supposed to have been around it or if it was just there as well.

I'll get a new one ordered tomorrow.

In the mean time, will it hurt to drive without it, as long as the belt is tight?

i would not drive it if possible, the belt could come off, also check the belt for damage as well. in my career i have seen 3 broken ones, i guess from fatigue. be ready for it to be a special order item, the last few i have needed took a few days to arrive.

In case anyone searching later needs this same part, the new mb part number has been changed to 601-993-27-10. The only difference is the prefix, old was 603, new is 601.

I'm sure it made sense to someone to change it...
