Took the plunge last night!

Well I did it.I pulled the trigger on a nice 1986 300SDL last night.

Everything works with the exception of the AC compressor, which I believe really is a freon leak as the car was tagged with a sticker about UV dye in the 'freon' It has a blue connector so I am hoping it wil take the off the shelf stuff...

i have all the service records going back to 1986
It has 294K on it but the major work done on it was
149K cc amplifier
182K Tranny and torque converter
215K timng chain and tensioner, belt idler, and trailing arm bushings
233K new radiator, fan clutch, belt and thermostat

"Virgin ALDA"

It runs well, but does not shut down from the key.(NEGOTIATING POINT!!)
I noticed a loose vacuum line while I was looking it over. Hmmm maybe that is the problem

All the power accessories work!

the wood in in great shape.

Needs to have the two rear muffler hangers replaced as they broke last night while towing it home (not registered -- Thanks AAA!)

Ummm that is about it. Oh, yeah -- got it for $2300!!

Pix to follow.

Now I have to figure out what to do with poor Bruno!

welcome to the w126 family...so, you didn't DRIVE it home???? How long ago since it was used for a daily driver? You have ALL the service records? Good.

I decoded that the interior was Palamino, but what color is the exterior?

I popped the plate from the 300SD onthe back of the car and called AAA as I drove from WV down to Stafford, Va and needed to get two vehicles back home. I thought about renting a U-haul trailer for the Suburban, but AAA is free towing under 100 miles and I was only 86 miles away from home so the car 'broke down'
This is my second W126 as I had/still have the '81 300SD but I am glad to be in the saddle with a MB diesel as the SD has been out of commission since January.

The exterior looks black but could be Navy blue. It is faded. I will see once I get some compound on it.

I also need to get some leather cleaner on the seats.

It was last used as a daily driver in January. The PO bought the car for his wife who HATED it. She is driving a Civic now

It spent all it's life in North Carolina before heading North to DC and NOVA.

I have two dealer record books and some receipts from an indy. I even have the registrations going back to 1986! Guy was a glove box packrat like I am.

Next GTG - I am there!

I can't wait to get him on the road. First comes an oil change and radiator flush. Then I wil do the brake and transmission fluids...

Oh and I need to replace all the fuses. I want to zero-time them all then start my replace them all every two years program like I learned on the SD and the BMW. Why the Germans could not use regular fuses is beyond me.

Thanks!

I am sure that I will be doing a lot of "On the 617 I used to do this what do I do on the 603" type questions.
The car is much more sophisticated with an airbag, antilock brakes and memory seats. A lot more electrical stuff to have fun with!

I just can't wait to get himon the road and see what the 603 is really like. One thing I can see off the bat is that it is much quieter than the 5cyl.
