Careful I've heard its dry heat out their, wouldn't want the paint to dry before it hits the car.

Sand blasting. I take all of my old dirty parts and put them in the driveway right before one of our nasty summer dust storms hit. They come back nice and shiny. No, not really...

Thats about what a good job should cost, whats it include? How many dents need to be taken out? Any other body work?

For $5k a good shop should remove all the trim, fix all the little dents that add up, remove the doors, hood and trunk lid. Spray everything with a good paint, then wetsand and buff.

Good paint jobs are not cheap.

When I paint my SDL I'm figuring $5k with me doing a bit of the prep myself. I want to leave at least $1k of that for a lot of new trim and seals.

Lots of labor and that cost money, or body pain.

Remember, If you are using quality automotive paints you need supplied air for breathing, not cartridge respirators.

I currently have a $2000 estimate to clean up the stone chips on mine and clean up a couple of very minor dings. I'm surprised it wouldn't be higher than $5K for a full repaint.

Diy

My neighbor did his truck. I couldn't believe how good it was. Very professional. I'm sure he had to practice a bit on a cardboard box or something, but it's done with a professional car paint power sprayer, and it looked great.

Yeah, but no dents or bodywork needed. I'll remove all the trim since I have totally new trim anyway, but come on! These guys don't have to do the door sills or anyother place where the original paint is! Other than that I have No body damage on my car period. Just paint chalking and fading into hazy milky waste. I might as well go sandwash the entire car, coat it with Urethane sealer/primer and then paint with a Urethane Anthracite metallic! The total cost for a good spray gun, gallon of paint with reducer, tack rags, thinner and assorted misc. $500.

In that case, $5K is probably reasonable. If they needed to do body work it would be more.

Well then with all the necessary materials, I might as well do it for 10% of the shop price. i have painted cars before, but it's been 20 years. I'm not paying $5000 for a paint job and frankly I care more about my car than those guys. I'm in the wrong business!

most bodyshops don't like doing full paintjobs.all their money is in accident/insurance work.i'll just say this,if you have never painted a car stick to solid colors.i've seen too many amatuer metallic jobs with tigerstripes.

That statement tells you don't really know all the work that is involved in a proper paint job. Its like when people are shocked that two touch up coats of varnish cost $2,500 on there boat. You want to say work with me, see what goes into it and then you won't complain.

The reason they do the door jams is to prevent the paint seam on the edge, and for a perfect match. Are you going to pull all the glass? The shop would, that takes time. Do you have a spray booth? A positive pressure resperator? Materials alone for that job are probably near $1k, heck the paint alone is probably $250+ a gallon. I don't know what the guns cost, I know my friend bought one for like $1k. I'll WAG that a positive pressure resperator runs $300-$500, then setting up a dust free booth has to cost a few bucks.

$5k is for a good driver paint job, a concours paint job like someone would put on a Gullwing or 540K can easly run $20k.

Any checking will have to be stripped down, that's the trouble with my 82's paint. If you try to sand it out if makes waves, if you try to fill the checks with primer, they will grow back out later. Those areas should be stripped down to metal and feathered in to the good areas. I too am going to do my own paint work, stripping the checked stuff, removing all the door handles. trims, etc, and cutting back the edges of the old glass seals so as to not have visible paint lines (I bought all new weatherseals $$$) I will leave the glass set in place with just enough of the old seals to prevent any spray from getting to the interior. I want to keep the color the same, however I will go with a base-clear instead of factory single stage, it has had the nose repainted once due to the checking and they used the clear, I think it really brings it out. Paint isn't terribly expensive, neither are guns, there are excellent imitations of pricy guns out there that work just as well for around $200. Pressurized respirators are nice, and definitely better, but with the right ventilation it can be done without. I learned long ago if you use an area where other things are, like a garage, make sure you cover everything with plastic....overspray is a pain. Also to anyone considering using such an area, make certain the water heater and furnace are turned off and disabled, paint fumes are very flammable. I actually plan to convert a bay of my workshop into a sealed booth.

He could prep the car himself easliy enough. Let the professionals paint it.

I just had my car painted.

I found 3 different body shops that would do the whole deal for 3,500-4k with pulling the doors and windows, good prep work, 2 stage paint, wet sand, and buff.

I went with a $2,700 job that did not involve pulling the windows. While this does leave very subtle masking marks (if they're a good bodyshop) it does make sense. Why spend more on paint than the car is worth? For 5k, you could find a great condition all original survivor. Perhaps cost of labor is cheaper when you live near the border.

Does the car need alot of bodywork?

*edit* He lives in AZ, durr...

Most important is prep work. You can use the most expensive paint in the world but if the surface is not prepared correctly, the paint won't last long.
