Manual trans input shaft bearing

I just bought another parts car to complete my parts quest for a 4 speed conv on my 83 wagon. The car is a 68-73 (not sure) 220D, iron case 4 speed. The car was sitting about 18 years and I got it running with little effort. Shockingly the brakes and clutch still work after all those years, however the foot throttle is rusted tight somewhere on the firewall. But anyway, the trans makes a whirling noise when the clutch is engaged, and stops when disengaged. Without knowing anything about the fluid level in the trans, I would say the input shaft bearing is worn, and I'm assuming the noise is not normal. I did get a chance to drive the car and it seems to shift well. When I pull the engine & trans I'm planning on changing the input shaft bearing and calling it good. Any suggestions? BTW, car shows 174,000 miles

The clutch throwout bearing, not input shaft bearing, is making that noise. Yes, it is somewhat normal.

Yes, but why would the throwout bearing be making noise when the clutch pedal is "out" (clutch engaged) ? Wouldn't the throwout bearing make the most noise when the clutch pedal is "in" (disengaged) ? Mine is making noise with the pedal "out", engaged.
Thank you

With the pedal in, the bearing is loaded with pressure. With the pedal out, its unloaded and free to rattle on the shaft.

I always thought it was the tranny that rattled in neutral.....in any case some rattlng in neutral with the clutch out is normal.

I don't know guys, its not really a rattling noise. Its more like a grindy worn bearing noise, not really loud, be there is a difference with the clutch in or out. Noise is the same while in gear and moving. If the car is just sitting there and if you press in the clutch you can hear the noise getting softer and then stopping. I would think that if it was the OT bearing, as soon as you would press the clutch in the noise would stop all at once, but it doesn't, it lingers on. It also changes "pitch" with engine speed.
Thanks to all

Likely the transmission bearings-it's not a bad job to replace them.

Have you done this type of service on these transmissions? I have never done anything with a MB manual unit.

check the haynes manual. IIRC it has a good exploded view of the manual trans assembly along with a rebuild how-to.

I have done one, a 240D. The trans came out and apart easily with out special tools. The fit of the bearings was not tight in the case or on the shafts. The trans may come out leaving the bellhousing on the engine, I don't remember for certain. I do remember it being a rather easy trans rebuild.

Remember to change the bearing and race as a pair or you'll end up replacing the bearing again soon.
