Pothole Caused Odd Constellation of Problems
I hit a BIG pothole last week and immediately had an odd constellation of problems. My ASD light came on, my tach went dead, my idle speed dropped, and on re-starting, it was like half of my glow plugs bailed out. I looked at the circuit diagram and couldn't see how the problems could possibly be related, so I did a search on this discussion board and found the problem in a couple of minutes! The OVP relay must have gotten knocked out of its seat, or a fuse got knocked out. Now I can't wait to get home to check!! Thanks for all of the generous contributors to this board.

I was thinking OVP also. Did you make sure to inspect the tire/wheel/suspension where the hit happened too? Yikes....

Ovp
I checked the OVP and the fuses were good. My dealer had a relay in stock so I changed it (BTW they're over $20 less in the Mercedes Store on this site, but I couldn't wait this time) The tach works again and the ASD light is off, so I'm sure that was the problem. I can't imagine it had anything to do with the pot hole, but who knows?? I'm still getting intermittent misses at idle. After the glow (or extended glow) it idles fine for 30 seconds or so, then it starts to puff and gets continually worse until I start off. When the car is warm, it goes away. It could be a leaky injector, but I put new injectors in 2 years ago and it's been running perfect. I'm going to change filters and give it 2 hits of diesel treat to see if it clears up. The wheel and suspension are fine, which amazed me because it was such a hard hit. When the weather warms up, I'll get a 4 wheel alignment.

Could it be possible that a fuel line got knocked loose or fractured from the hit just enough to allow a very tiny air leak that builds up @ idle?

I'm not ruling out anything at this point. Next weekend I'll check the glow plugs and inspect the fuel lines at the same time. Some of the plastic fuel line clips have broken from the heat and high-mileage so I'll make sure they haven't been rubbing and replace some clips. The lines are very thick-walled. I've been through this before a few times over the years and learned that sometimes it's due just to a tank of crappy diesel fuel so I don't get too excited until I'm on another tank full. Thanks -RZ
