total loss of vacuum. 84 300td wagon

so what's the best or most economical route. i currently have no vacuum at the vacuum pump.

do i rebuild. how hard is that?
can i update to electric vacuum pumps found on newer cars?

can i use the different style vacuum pumps found on my 300d or 240d? do they mount up the same?

oh yeah and how do you make them "live" longer?
