Sunroof switch smoking....
79 300D.
Sunroof fuse was removed, to make sure the motor didn't die when the sunroof was open. Car came like this when I bought it. I put a fuse in, and the sunroof opened and closed fine. On the second try, I noticed a small plume of smoke coming from the top of the switch. I closed the sunroof at that point. I tried it again, 2 more times, and the sunroof still opened and closed. Now the sunroof will not open, but the fuse is not blown. Does this mean I need a new switch ? Anyone have instructions on how to do this ? I'm going to have to take the whole console apart....ugh. Thanks, Marty

You've released the magic smoke from the switch and it's not working any more... Seriously, it seems like there's too much load on the switch and it overheated, probably melting some of the plastic components inside. Check the fuse against the specification in the manual to be sure the one you put in is not too large.

Sunroof switch is located above the climate controls correct? These switches pull out from the front and then the wiring plug and fibre optic connector are disconnected. A small flat blade screw driver is inserted top then bottom of switch to pry/rock it out from the dash face. Sounds to me that the sunroof motor is being overworked. Lubing the sun roof slides can help after the tracks are cleaned. Do a search for sunroof or try dieselgiants site to clean the tracks.
