Oil drain tube from air filter............???
Ok so I am at the breaking point, either I figure out where the air filter drain tube connects to the block or I sell this project car. Its dripping way too much oil for my gf to tolerate (brick driveway)...
I have attached pictures... basically the previous owner had an aftermarket air intake with a moroso oil seperator... I need to find out where the tube from the bottom of the oil seperator is supposed to go since there was no oil drain tube (from the air filter) when I purchased this car.. I searched and read on the forums that there is supposed to be a plug next to the oil drain tube for the turbo (top of the oil pan) but there isnt one there, doesnt look like it was ever one there to begin with. There is a bolt on the block that looks way too clean to be original, could that be it? If that bolt is it, how do I go about ordering the correct part for it? I ordered a drain tube from mbparts usa but that tube works its way down right next to the turbo oil drain tube. Please take a look at the pictures and help me figure out where the pipe from the oil seperator is supposed to go.. or how I can go about fixing this.. |

For orientation
Take a look at this link and see if it provides some orientation - car in the pics is a 84 300sd
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=206187&highlight=oil+drain The two piece tube you show in the first two pics looks like the drain that should be coming from the bottom of the turbo. What you want to find is another opening just to the right of that turbo oil drain tube (moving inboard going closer to the block) where the drain that normally comes from the bottom of the stock air cleaner assembly snakes down and via a metal tube and enters into the oil pan (about 1" or less from the turbo oil drain tube). The smaller diameter opening is where the check valve is on the write up link above. The pics in the link are from the bottom with the oil pan off looking up. On the opposite side looking down past the turbo you should see a little brass nipple that is on the top of the oil pan that normally has one o-ring - that is where the tube from the botton of the air cleaner enters the oil pan.

ok so I cleaned up that area and looked for a plug of some sort near the oil drain tube from the turbo. There is nothing there. Could this oil pan be from another vehicle or could this particular model not have a drain tube for the oil from the air filter? Maybe a different location?

Look at the thread and your engine and you should see the oil drain on the passenger side of the engine. I think your first pic shows it. That's where the oil unit should drain.

ok so after scouring the forums for hours, and complete cleaning off all the sludge next to the oil drain tube for the turbo, i have come to the conclusion that some 300sd's did not have an oil separator tube from the air filter OR it just drained out onto the ground. I believe my car is a cali model. can someone confirm this so i dont go nuts looking for a drain bung on the sump?

2 California models here, '81 and '82 both have the drain tube.

The one i have is an 84. there is no sign of anything next to the turbo oil drain tube. I cleaned it off and theres just shiny clean solid metal.

I'm stumped...
I only have the one example to reference - and I have it.
Based on your post - we have the same car - so I'm not sure what gives ![]()

You have a CA version car. Take a look at my DIY link about converting my CA to Federal emissions. I mention in the link about my car NOT having the second hole for the oil drain. I have the oil separator line running directly into the intake tube before the turbo.

I did happen to look at that post when I was searching for an answer but my main concern is the whole RUNAWAY diesel thing. I have a lot of blowby and oil that drips out of the oil separator bottom tube (see my first post for the setup). I dont want to feed the oil back into my air intake and cause a problem. the previous owner had an aftermarket air intake setup and he just let the tube from the bottom of the oil seperator drip down onto the ground. So my I have two questions I hope an expert answer >>
1. where did the oil from the original setup go for the california models if it didnt have a second hole for the air filter oil drain tube? 2. I was thinking of tapping a NPT plug/bung right onto the OIL pan and run a tube from it straight up to the bottom of the oil separator. (Of course Id remove the oil pan first to do it) Would this be OK? is the oil in the pan under pressure and cause it to spew up the tube to the oil separator? |

I don't know if this helps much but my line runs down and around to where the oil return line for the turbo plugs in at. The oil separator drain tube is pluged right behind the turbo return line.

kuhns thanks for the input, but ive determined that my vehicle doesnt have a spot for the oil return line from the air filter next to the turbo oil drain tube.. :-) now if someone can tell me if its feasible/safe to tap a fitting directly onto the oil pan and run a line up to the oil separater to drain the oil?l
