Talking Brian's EGR plate is leaking on me!

Just a heads up, there are two types of gaskets for the EGR. One is metal and you get it from the dealer, the other is gasket material and Worldpac sells them. I used a metal one from the dealer and it leaks, I can't tighten the bolts anymore or I will strip them. Luckly I have a spare one sitting around.

So if you use a metal one with Brians kit it could leak on you.

Oh the engineer is going to reign a mighty fury down upon you for that title....especially when it's the gasket leaking, not Brian's plate

Still - it's probably helpful to make everyone aware.....

Mine leaks but I'm just calling it a "who ever heard of a metal gasket" problem instead of a Brian problem, I commend him for sending us MB parts with them.

Mine leaks too, but it serves as a gentle reminder that I'm still burning oil through the exhaust system. I figure that if I fixed everything right, then there'd be nothing for it to leak in the first place, problem solved.

Been in CT all day.

WTF is the deal with the leaks? Just developed over time? What's the evidence of the leak..........oil seepage?? In theory, it can only leak air..........unless the turbo seals are leaking...........and on yours that's not possible because you don't burn any oil..........?????????

Nah I always have a slight oil residue in the intake, which has stumped me since I got the car since the oil level never changes. The amount hasn't changed so I figure the turbo seals are probably just worn a bit. I don't plan on actualy fixing it until it starts burning oil, and its going on 5 years.

Anyway I just took the entire intake off and cleaned it in a parts washer, so its spotless. I drove the car on Sunday and I noticed their was a mist residue coming from that gasket and blowing over that area. I tightened the bolts as tight as I thought was prudent considering they are just in aluminum. So I drove it again on Friday and it did the same thing. The gasket was brand new I didn't reuse the old one.

It could just be a fluke. I tightened the bolts with a 3/8 drive holding it around the head so I doubt I warped anything, more so considering how thick that plate is.

Nah, it's not a fluke. Either the riser tube is not flat enough of the plate is not flat enough. The crush of the gasket is insufficient to make up the difference between the two surfaces.

That's disconcerting.

Try another gasket and don't tighten it too much. Just enough to crush the metal lip.

I had a spare one in my parts box that was made out of gasket matieral, so I used it. But I havn't driven the car since. Considering the considerable thickness of that gasket I don't see how it can leak.

I have no idea how either part could have changed its shape over the winter. The plate sat on the air box and that part of the intake was just run through a parts washer, nothing that would alter it.

BTW MB must have changed these. The gasket I had kicking around looked old, the package was yellowing, and it was from MB of North Haven. Now they sell the metal ones.

You know, now that I think about it that could have been leaking for a while and I may not have noticed it. That area of the intake was caked in oil residure, that little aluminum pipe going up to that casting from the turbo had a healthy 1/8 coating on it. Now that its clean thats probably why I saw it.

Mine has a slight leak too, oil. I didn't think it was a big deal. So are you saying a new gasket won't help?
