1985 300TD Coolant Loss

My wife just got home and the car was steaming. It seems to have lost all the coolant (at least the reservoir is empty). There is coolant on the back of the engine, on top of the valve cover and around the rear of the valve cover. The front of the engine is dry. She said the car was running fine, until a few miles from home, when the heat stopped working. (blew cold air only) The hoses seem intact and I could not see an obvious source of the leak. This morning when she left, there was a small puddle of water on the garage floor. It did not appear to be coolant. I fear that this is bad.
Any insight would be appreciated. of course this happens on friday night.
Thanks
