Radiator flush
I'm about to swap out a 1984 300D turbo Radiador. My existing (cracked on top) shows rusty residue. Can I get away with empting the old antireeze, running the car on water to work and back to flush out the rust. This is all highway 100 miles round trip, 55*F outside temps.

MB recommends a citric acid flush for the cooling system. I just purchased 50 lbs of the stuff. Do a google search on the procedure.

Get 2.2 lbs. of citric acid if you've noticed corrosion issues. You'll be glad you did. |

Citric acid is to be done only after the system has been deoiled whether or not there is evidence of oil in the system. That's a very easy step to do and worth it to give the citric acid every chance to do what you want. Again, a search will bring it all up.

I have done citric acid flushes in the past about a year ago. I'm probbibly gonna skip it this time. I ended up getting Texeco antifreeze. The guy talked me out of the Prestone expensive stuff. Nothing but the best for my old girl. Thanks for the help. No time or money to do it the right way, but I did add a small bottle of Zertex H2O pump lube/rust inhiditor. I know this may not be the best way to do all this but I'm married with children. Filling the antifreeze seems to be taking for ever. The design of the resivoir filling from the bottom seems strange. I'm not going to run grease until I get all the air out of the radiator. Only able to put 2 gallons in so far (50/50 green glycol/water) drive for 1/2 hour up/down steep hills w/ heat on. need to get anothe gallon or so in to cover the greaseCar hoses. Only got 62 MPG diesel the first time I ran grease with air pockets truought, so I dont want to make that mistake again.
Ooh, I just used my brain to figure out how much extra anitifreeze i need cause I have a greasecar system. Just measure the hose length of the system, get another hose, fill it with water and use that much more to top off. Add a little more for the copper coils on each end and I have my capacity. See, I'm not as dumb as my wife says I am. Last edited by Crappy Gas Pipe; 03-29-2008 at 10:32 PM. |
