'99 e300d --- what oil?

Jeeze I did a search and expected to find dozens of posts and threads about oils. I guess not!

I've always run Rotella 15w40 in my VW diesels, but the previous owner of my benz kept it on a diet of synthetic. I called the dealership but they didn't really seem to know. No other e300d's in town.

What is the best weight and brand of synthetic to use in the om606?

Thanks!

Hi, if you wish to follow the engine mfr's recommendation, they call for a 229.xx oil.

The Rotella certainly doesn't meet that standard.

You need a full syn that is diesel rated meeting MB spec 229.5.

Lots to choose from......try M1 Truck and TurboDiesel in a 5/40wt.

No sarcasm at all.

I did a search for om606 + oil and didn't really find any info that points to what oils people are using in this engine. The Rotella was fine in my crappy old high-mile VWs, but I am looking for a good Synthetic. I want to know what others are running.

Thanks, is that what you're running? Mobile1 5/40?

I started with M1 European Blend 0/40 which then disappeared when Mobil reformulated everything. Switched to Rotella Syn, now back to M1 Truck and TurboDiesel.

If you like I can email you the MB spec when I get home this evening.

Jordan - Picking oil for the 606 is not as easy as it is for the ealrier models. There are few products on the shelf that meets MB's requirements.

Sure, that would be great. My owners manual doesn't give any info on oil wt other that "recommended oils" or some such thing.

I called the dealer and the parts guy said to put in 20w50 synth. Seemed thick to me (both oil and parts guy)

Sorry - I wasn't trying to be a jerk.....it's just a running joke here that we have too many oil threads/debates.....and I didn't know if I missed April Fools day or you were trying to Rick Roll me like Kuan did. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=218342

I'm a rotella man myself......but I don't have one of those fancy '99s either.

No sorry, I really did try to find info before I posted a new thread. I found generic stuff on diesel oils, but nothing specific to the om606.

The only thing I found about rotella synthetics was this warning about the oil thickening over time.

I think the dealer goofed up my oil order last time (first time changing the oil). What they gave me didn't cost nearly what I expected it to and it didn't say "synthetic" anywhere on it... I'll just wait until the engine service indicator goes to 5000 this time around rather than the full 10k and change it again to M1 Truck'n Diesel.

Notfar, you know about the oil service indicator on the car right?

Here is a list of oil that I found. I use Motul 8100 excess on my 99 E300 Diesel.

The who what? Is it something that gets reset when oil changes are done? How does the DIYer do that?

Look up FSS in the manual.

Close the front door before attempting to reset.

Now that there's funny, I don't care who you are!

On the serious side, I am in the same boat for the oil in my '95 606. What do I use? I am going to try find the M1 at Wal-Mart (heaven forbid...I'm sure Jordan understands our local dilemma here in Lancaster) since they have a good selection of diesel oils. I go to Wal-Mart kicking and screaming. I do my best not to shop there, but they do have a good selection of diesel oils...better than all the local auto parts stores combined.
