Hi Ellie, welcome to the group. You're car probably takes R-12 if it hasn't been converted to the newer, "safer" R-134. Putting freon is easy, it's just the getting hold of it that's hard. R-12 purchase now requires certification unless you can luck onto someone selling some surplus and even then, it's pretty expensive...

Question Thank you for responding, Evan!

Does this sound like it will work in my car just fine?

I don't know what that stuff is unless it's "freeze 12" which is a product I've only heard of on this forum. You can probably use the search function and put in "freeze 12" and read more about the pro's and cons. The cans appear to have the newer style connection on the top and it may be a challenge to find the right hose to take this fitting to the older style connector on your car. They may be redily available though but I'm not sure since I've never had to find one...

hey, post some pictures of your engine compartment that include at least one of the freon line connectors so we can tell if the car was converted or not.
also, it's best to start a new thread when you have a question about something that does not answer the original question in a thread.

If that is the case, might I politely suggest that you take your car to a professional.

Welcome home Ellie!

I am glad you found a new home... now "take yer shoes off and set a spell"

The freon connectors are on the big hoses that run under your hood from the AC compressor. They should have plastic caps on them with different colors. The red cap is the high pressure side and the other cap is the low pressure side. I would take the car to a good AC guy and let him look at it. He can tell from the caps what gas you have in the car and he can do things like add dye to the gas and look for leaks with a UV light. If the car is your baby, send it to a good AC place. Once you know what is wrong with it, you can always do more yourself.

Are you sure that it is the gas charge? Many times these cars just have climate control issues. Are you sure that the heat is completely off?
There are issues with the monovalve that will let them leak hot water into the heater core. Learn how to do searches as this forum is full of great information. Use the Google Search function and you will find lots of threads on whatever you are trying to do.

Also join the Mercedes Club of America (MBCA.org) you will find lots of help in your local chapter.

Oh and don't forget Phil at Fastlane (the buy parts tab) If you email him, he can answer questions... just buy the stuff from him as he is the force behind the forum...

Have Fun!

Joe

I wondered why so many replies to this were posted since I last looked, but introduce a lady needing help and it is amazing at the amount of traffic that will happen.
Ellie, you simply don't know close to enough to properly top off or fix your AC situation. The "pound foolish" expression is pretty accurate.
The junk you linked us to on Craigslist is trash. You can't "not vacuum" an AC system and have it function properly for any length of time, if at all. Just try and take your car to some independent shop that you are or someone you know trusts.
First they will have to determine freon type and system status at this point. And you will get more help with your particular car starting a thread in the "Tech Help" section.
Good luck, hot weather on the way........

Just put a full R12 container on the scale...36lbs (including cardboard box), so yours is about 1/2 full, or is it 1/2 empty?

nope, even with all the cars I drive and have, I have not named any of them.

last time I had a car with a name I lived at my mom's house, and drove "Bruno" a Red/Red 1990 Corvette ZR1... naming anything else just didn't seem right to me...

Is that actually a license to buy the stuff, outright? Or just to work on cars to reclaim it? If it's a license to buy, that's pretty good.
