Let us know what model year and the engine type. Unfortunately the newer MB's with the 220 engine were not shipped to the US, so we may not have anyone with direct experience. However, they are not that different from the 300 engines, so you should get some decent input.

From my experience with the 1998 model year E300D, the problem you describe is due to the hoses you say you checked and are good. Even your description of heavy leakage at idle and lower leakage with the throttle open.

If you didn't have leakage before and now you have a lot of leakage, I think the hoses are the problem. The metal lines just don't fail like that and the injectors, like the metal line connectors, have no rubber seals. Nothing to abruptly fail.

The rubber hose is hard to see defects in because it is covered with cloth on the outside. The cloth is not Diesel fuel proof - it won't hold back the fuel. So, if the rubber is more than a few years old it is possible it is cracked underneath the cloth outside cover, in which case it will leak and the source might not be apparent.

On my car the hoses are very difficult to get off and get new ones on. Older cars like the W123 240D are relatively easy. I had to use a sharp knife to slit the side of the hose where it goes over the injector nipple. You have to be very careful not to scratch the nipple or the new hose will not seal over the scratch. Then I used a needle nose pliers to push the new hose on the injector overflow nipple. Don't cut them too short or too long. Either way causes premature failure from engine vibration. It leads to rubbing on the cloth and wearing into the rubber. I also had mice crawl in and chew them once.

So, the hose is inexpensive and changing it will have a good chance of fixing the problem. Good luck, Jim
